An introduction to Trabzon<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are several theories on the origin of the city\u2019s name. One is that \u201cTrabzon\u201d is based on the Greek word \u201ctrapeza\u201d, a rectangular table and a reference to the city\u2019s table-shaped hill. Another theory is that the name \u201cTrabzon\u201d has Arabic roots; in Arab history, the city is called variously \u201cTibarende\u201d, \u201cTibarite\u201d, \u201cTrabende\u201d, and \u201cTrabzende\u201d. Evliya \u00c7elebi, the 17th-century Ottoman explorer, wrote in his travelogue, <\/span>Sey\u00e2hatn\u00e2me<\/span><\/i>, that the name of the city was derived from \u201ctur\u00e2b-\u0131 zen (female voice)\u201d and \u201ct\u00e2rab-\u0131 efzun (enchanted earth)\u201d \u2013 how lyrical!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a history dating to the 8th century BC, Trabzon has been home to numerous tribes and settlements. It was conquered in 1461 by Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror), and is also the birthplace of Suleiman II (Suleiman the Magnificent). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day One: The Road to Ma\u00e7ka<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u015eolma Plateau<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll find native flora and fauna, and beautifully scenic vistas in the Ma\u00e7ka district of Trabzon province. If the weather permits, you can hike the 16 kilometers up Kulin Mountain to the \u015eolma Plateau, 1,800 meters above sea level. If hiking isn\u2019t an option, you can reach the Plateau via minibus. The \u015eolma Plateau is about 52 kilometers from Trabzon.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alt\u0131ndere Valley National Park<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The S\u00fcmela Monastery, one of Trabzon\u2019s most important historical sites, is on the western slope of the Alt\u0131ndere Valley, in the Alt\u0131ndere Valley National Park. Declared a national park in 1987, Alt\u0131ndere Valley dazzles with gorgeous views, lush greens and native fauna. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reach back into time at the S\u00fcmela Monastery<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Believed to have been founded around 386 AD, the S\u00fcmela Monastery is built into a cliffside on the Karada\u011f mountain. The impressive structure, often referred to as the \u201cMonastery of the Virgin Mary\u201d, is a fine example of its period \u2013 one in which monasteries were erected outside the city in relatively secluded locations. The structure can be reached via a 300-meter walk through the forest, and it is about 47 kilometers from Trabzon.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
