The Island was originally called Halki \u2013 the Greek word for copper \u2013 a reference to its antique copper mines. The Turkish name, Heybeli, is from the Turkish word for \u201csaddlebag,\u201d which the Island\u2019s geography is said to resemble.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steam-powered ferry service to Heybeliada began in the 19th century. The Island\u2019s year-round population is around seven thousand people; this number increases in the summer. As on the other Princes\u2019 Islands, motor vehicles are prohibited; in Heybeliada, tours are conducted via electric vehicles. There are two main touring roads, the \u2018Big Tour\u2019 and the \u2018Small Tour\u2019 \u2013 also known as the \u2018Lovers Tour.\u2019&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>The four hills of Heybeliada<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De\u011firmentepe, the highest of Heybeliada\u2019s four hills, ascends 136 meters. The 85-meter \u00dcmit Hill is home to the Halki Seminary and thus was called \u2018Priest Hill\u2019 in the past. The other two high hills on the Island are Ta\u015foca\u011f\u0131 and Makarios.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background The Heybeliada Sanatorium, founded in 1924 by the order of Atat\u00fcrk, was also a training and research hospital until 2005. Prominent figures treated in the Heybeliada Sanatorium include the statesman \u0130smet \u0130n\u00f6n\u00fc, the poet Ece Ayhan and the writer R\u0131fat Ilgaz. The Sanitarium is also the location for the film \u201cKelebe\u011fin R\u00fcyas\u0131\u201d, written and directed by Y\u0131lmaz Erdo\u011fan. While visitors cannot enter the structure, the outdoor area is worth a visit.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Halki Seminary<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halki Seminary is on \u00dcmit Hill, the highest hill on the Island. The 9<sup>th<\/sup>-century Byzantine era Ata Triada Church served as a place of worship as well as a seminary until 1844; it was called the \u201cHigher Orthodox Theology School\u201d until 1923, when its name was changed to \u201cHalki Seminary\u201d. In 1971, all schools in T\u00fcrkiye&nbsp; were connected to the state: the school, which had become the \u201cHeybeliada Private Greek High School\u201d, was closed by the patriarchate at the end of the same academic year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Heybeliada Naval High School (Bahriye)<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approaching Heybeliada by sea , the first building you\u2019ll see will most likely be Heybeliada Naval High School, also known as the \u201cBahriye\u201d. This important institution was founded in 1773 in Kas\u0131mpa\u015fa Shipyard under the name of \u201cM\u00fchendishane-i Bahr-\u0131 Humayun (The School of Naval Engineering)\u201d. Although connected to different institutions over the years, the school resumed operations on Heybeliada in 1946 and continued to provide education until it was closed down along with other military high schools in 2016. Today, the historical building of Heybeliada Naval High School is open to visitors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>H\u00fcseyin Rahmi G\u00fcrp\u0131nar Museum<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The home of H\u00fcseyin Rahmi G\u00fcrp\u0131nar, a prominent figure of Turkish literature is on Heybeliada. G\u00fcrp\u0131nar spent 32 years of his life here, living in the house until 1944. The home became a museum in 2017. The contents of the H\u00fcseyin Rahmi G\u00fcrp\u0131nar Museum belong to the writer and include 350 Turkish volumes, 304 French volumes and 110 newspapers. The museum is currently under restoration.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Aya Yorgi Cliff Church<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believed to date from the late 16th century, the pink-colored Aya Yorgi Cliff Monastery was originally called the \u201cHagios Georgios tou Kremnou (the monastery of Saint George of the Precipice)\u201d. The monastery is set on a hillside overlooking B\u00fcy\u00fckada and offers stunning views.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Bet Yaakov Synagogue<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Jewish population on Heybeliada expanded, a synagogue was needed. Built by the Neve Shalom Foundation, the Heybeliada Bet Yaakov Synagogue was opened for worship on&nbsp; June 10, 1956. The simple structure can be visited on Saturdays and religious holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Hagios Nikolaos Church<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Built over the ruins of what is believed to be a Byzantine era church dedicated to Saint Nicholas the patron saint of mariners, the Hagios Nikolaos Church was erected in 1857 by architect Stefanis Gaitanakis. The structure was impacted in 1894 by an earthquake and restored with the permission of Abd\u00fclhamid II.
