It is just one of T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s dozens of sites on this list. Movement occurs across the rooftops, while entry into the home is via a ladder through a hole in the ceiling. Administratively, it lies within the K\u00fc\u00e7\u00fckk\u00f6y Neighborhood in the district of \u00c7umra. It is only about 10 kilometers from the district center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The settlement consists of two mounds separated by an old branch of the \u00c7ar\u015famba, in other words, a now-dry floodplain. The East Mound is larger, higher, and older. The West Mound is lower and younger. Although these two hills rising above the plain may look like ordinary piles of earth at first glance, beneath them lies one of the most significant transitions in human history, the shift from hunter-gatherer life to settled life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"background-color:#ebebeb;color:#ebebeb\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>How to get to \u00c7atalh\u00f6y\u00fck?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most practical way is to fly to Konya first. You can begin your journey by booking a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkishairlines.com\/en-tr\/flights\/flights-to-konya\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flight to Konya<\/a>. If you will spend a few days in the city, our Konya travel guide is a good starting point for stops stretching from the Mevlana Museum to Sille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Konya Airport is about 18 kilometers from the city center. After arriving at the airport, you can reach the center by shuttle, taxi, or rental car. The most comfortable way to reach \u00c7atalh\u00f6y\u00fck is by private or rental car. Head toward \u00c7umra, and you will reach the archaeological site in about an hour. Free parking is available at the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you prefer public transportation, regular minibuses run from Konya to \u00c7umra. During the summer, you may find shared minibuses from \u00c7umra to the archaeological site; at other times of the year, you can take a taxi. Travelers arriving by train can take a train toward Karaman from Konya and get off at \u00c7umra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"background-color:#ebebeb;color:#ebebeb\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>When to visit \u00c7atalh\u00f6y\u00fck?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Konya Plain is a region dominated by a continental climate. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold. That is why the most pleasant times to visit are spring and autumn. The periods from April to June and from September to October are the most suitable for touring, both in terms of temperature and lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The archaeological site is open every day of the year. Visiting hours are 09.00 to 17.00, but the ticket office closes at 16.40. Because much of the excavation area is under protective roofs (shelters), the visit is not greatly affected by rain. Still, because you will be walking in an open area, it is a good idea to visit early in the morning to avoid the oppressive heat of the summer midday. The site has restrooms, a cafe, and souvenir shops. For visitors with limited mobility, it may be helpful to contact the site management before the visit; ground conditions in some areas of the archaeological site can make access All the layers from the Neolithic period accumulated on this mound. Under the shelters, you can see cross sections of the houses, including their plastered walls, hearths, storage spaces, and underfloor burials. The interior surfaces of the houses were repeatedly replastered and whitewashed. In some structures, hundreds of layers of plaster have been counted. This indicates both a sustained maintenance economy and the space\u2019s charge with social memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Bat\u0131 H\u00f6y\u00fck <\/b><b>(West Mound)<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where life continued after the East Mound was abandoned. Dated to the Early Chalcolithic period, the West Mound is not a simple continuation but a true space of transformation, marked by new architecture, ceramics, and kitchen practices. Current excavations aim to understand why people moved from the east to the west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Reconstructed House<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After seeing the foundations and wall remains in the excavation area, the question that immediately comes to mind is, &#8220;What exactly did these houses look like?&#8221; The answer is the full-scale experimental house. This is not only an excavation site but also a laboratory that shows how archaeological interpretation evolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many years, \u00c7atalh\u00f6y\u00fck was described as &#8220;the world\u2019s first city&#8221; and as a center of a &#8220;mother goddess cult.&#8221; Today, experts approach both of these powerful narratives with greater caution. The settlement has no large public buildings, monumental temples, or separate cemeteries. The houses are similar in size. Iconic examples, such as the seated female figurine interpreted by Mellaart, do exist. However, when the assemblage of figurines is considered as a whole, animal forms and abstract figures are just as dominant as human figures. In other words, the term &#8220;a single-centered mother goddess cult&#8221; no longer fully aligns with the available data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most recent contribution comes from genetics. A 2025 study in Science combined ancient DNA from 131 individuals from the East Mound with archaeological data. The results are striking. In the early period, people buried in the same house were mostly close relatives, whereas in the later period they were often unrelated.
