It brings all of this together in a single journey: the streets of Stone Town, shaped over centuries by Arab, Indian, Persian, African, and European influences; spice gardens with the smells of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg; forests home to endemic red colobus monkeys; and shores where the tides transform the landscape throughout the day.

Although the name “Zanzibar” refers to an archipelago, Unguja, its biggest island, features in most itineraries. Key destinations like Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe, and Jozani are all on Unguja. In order to see different facets of the island, you can arrange your itinerary around three themes: history, nature, and the sea.

Zanzibar fact sheet

Country

Zanzibar (a semi-autonomous archipelago of the United Republic of Tanzania)

Region

East Africa, Indian Ocean

Capital

Zanzibar City (historic center: Stone Town)

Area

Approximately 2,460 km² (main island Unguja: approximately 1,666 km²)

Language

Swahili (official language); English is widely spoken in the tourism sector

Climate

Tropical climate; June to October is generally drier and cooler, while March to May is the long rainy season

Vegetation

Tropical forests, mangroves, coconut palms and spice plants

GMT Offset

GMT+3 (no time difference with Türkiye)

Calling Code

+255

Currency

Tanzanian Shilling (TZS)

Zanzibar type plug

Infographic for the Zanzibar travel guide explaining Type D and Type G plug types, voltage and frequency details, and plug adapter requirements

Two different plug types are used in Zanzibar: Type D and Type G. Stone Town, the archipelago’s historical and administrative center, is situated on the western coast of Unguja.

The geographical location of the island made it one of the most important stops for maritime trade between the Southeast African coast, the Arabian Peninsula, and India. Today, this Indian Ocean connection can be found in the very essence of the cultural diversity in architecture, the Swahili language, cuisine, and daily life.

How to get to Zanzibar?

View of the historic buildings, sandy beach, and turquoise ocean along the Zanzibar Stone Town waterfront

Flights to Zanzibar are operated to and from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, located near Stone Town. You can view available flight options from Istanbul on the Zanzibar flight ticket page.

It takes only a short time to travel by road from the airport to Stone Town, whereas journeys to the northern coasts (like Nungwi and Kendwa) and the eastern and southeastern coasts (like Paje and Jambiani) take longer. Booking a transfer through your accommodation or using a licensed taxi are among the most convenient options, especially when you first arrive.

Requirements for entry to Zanzibar

Holders of regular Turkish passports must obtain a Tanzania visa to travel to Zanzibar. You can obtain the visa electronically or, subject to certain conditions, at the border. However, holders of special, service, and diplomatic passports are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel and contain at least one blank page. Foreign visitors to Zanzibar are also required to have the mandatory travel insurance provided by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, even when they already have some other travel insurance. We recommend you check visa, insurance, and entry requirements through official channels before your trip.

Health and vaccination requirements for a visit to Zanzibar

For travelers flying directly from Türkiye to Zanzibar, yellow fever vaccination is not mandatory, but a valid vaccination certificate may be required from travelers arriving from a country where yellow fever is present or from those who have transited through such a country for 12 hours or longer. Since there is also a risk of malaria in Zanzibar, it is advised to check the most recent health recommendations before traveling, take precautions against mosquitoes, and consult a healthcare professional about your personal health condition.

When to visit Zanzibar?

The coast and boats seen beyond a window with a traditional carved wooden lattice sunshade in Stone Town, Zanzibar

Zanzibar has a tropical climate. The period between June and October is one of the best times to visit the island, with drier and relatively cooler weather conditions. January and February can also be warm and relatively dry. The “long rains” (locally known as Masika) typically occur from March to May, while shorter rainfall is seen during the final months of the year. You can check data from the Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) before your trip for the latest seasonal forecasts.

If you plan to explore Stone Town and the island’s inland areas alongside your beach vacation, try to make the most of the early morning hours to avoid high temperatures and humidity. Those staying on the east coast should also check the daily tide times, no matter what the season is.

Transportation and route planning in Zanzibar

Although Unguja may look small on the map, frequently traveling between Stone Town and the northern or southeastern coasts within a single day can be time-consuming. Private transfers and taxis are among the most convenient transportation options. While local minibuses called dala-dala offer a more economical alternative, they may not suit every itinerary in terms of routes, luggage, or comfort.

It is more efficient to plan visits to Stone Town, the spice farms, and Changuu Island while staying on the west coast; Jozani and Paje or Jambiani while on the southeastern route; and Nungwi, Kendwa, and northern boat tours while staying in the north. If you are visiting Zanzibar for the first time, splitting your trip between two different accommodation bases, Stone Town and a coastal region of your choice, can give you a more relaxed experience.

Culture in Zanzibar: Stone Town

A bird’s-eye view of the historic city architecture and wooden boats anchored in the turquoise waters off the beach in Stone Town, Zanzibar

To understand Zanzibar’s history, your starting point should be Stone Town. A walk in which you pay attention to these details offers a deeper understanding of Stone Town’s architecture and daily life.

Stone Town’s Swahili houses

Aerial drone panoramic view of tile and metal-roofed houses in the historic center of Stone Town, Zanzibar

Coral stone and mangrove wood have long served as the primary building materials for the traditional structures of Stone Town. When combined with thick walls, inner courtyards, high ceilings, and narrow streets, this architecture creates a natural cooling system adapted to the hot and humid climate. UNESCO also highlights coral stone, lime mortar, and mangrove timber as the defining materials of Stone Town’s historic buildings.

The narrow streets are no coincidence, either. The layout of the buildings blocks direct sunlight for much of the day, allowing pedestrians to move around in the shade. Made from durable woods like teak and decorated with geometric or floral motifs, these massive wooden doors once served as indicators of the homeowner’s wealth and social position.

You can see both Omani and Indian influences in these doors. The brass spikes have their origins in a design tradition used to prevent war elephants from battering down gates. Since there was no threat of elephant attacks in Zanzibar, these elements eventually evolved into decoration and symbols of status. Motifs such as chains, fish, lotus flowers, and various plants are also parts of the symbolic language of these doors. The Stone Town Heritage Society associates the chain motif with protection, security, and the warding off of evil spirits.

However, attempting to categorize the doors using a rigid rule, such as “round means Indian, while angular means Omani”, would be an oversimplification. As styles influenced one another throughout history, hybrid designs were born. According to UNESCO records, semi-circular upper sections became widespread due to Indian influence, but various groups eventually started to use them.

Old Fort

The stone walls of the historic Ngome Kongwe (Old Fort) in Zanzibar’s Stone Town and the view of the surrounding tropical garden

The Old Fort, or Ngome Kongwe, located on the Stone Town waterfront, is one of the city’s most significant historical landmarks. The current fort was built by the Omanis between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, after the Portuguese lost their power over the East African coast. There used to be a church and other structures from the Portuguese era where the castle now stands. Stones from these earlier buildings are known to have been used in the fort’s construction. Over the years, the fort has served various purposes. A key cultural and event venue in Stone Town, the Old Fort is currently closed to visitors due to ongoing restoration work that began in 2026. The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) is among the organizations that see spice farm visits as one of the island’s essential experiences.

The most interesting part of this experience is seeing the spices not just in their jarred form, but on the very plants from which they grow. For example, black pepper, white pepper, and peppercorns at various stages of ripeness all come from the same plant. What makes them different is how they are harvested and processed. Seeing a nutmeg fruit, realizing that cinnamon is actually tree bark, or discovering that cloves are dried flower buds can give you a whole new perspective on the spices you use in your daily life.

The origins of these spices also explain why Zanzibar is such a multicultural place. The cultivation of plants native to South and Southeast Asia in East Africa, along with their export to other continents by Arab and Indian traders, has left a lasting mark on everything from the island’s cuisine to its architecture.

Tropical fruits and cassava

Red bananas, pineapples, and tropical fruits on stalls and hanging at the local fruit market in the village of Jozani, Zanzibar

On the spice farms, you don’t see merely spices. On the east coast, in areas like Paje, Jambiani, and Matemwe, the sea can recede hundreds of meters during low tide. While this creates one of Zanzibar’s most striking natural views, it requires some planning for those wishing to swim at any time of day.

Nungwi

A coastal view in Nungwi, Zanzibar, featuring a white sandy beach, lush green coastal vegetation, and the clear turquoise Indian Ocean

Nungwi, located at the northern tip of Unguja, is one of Zanzibar’s most renowned beach destinations. With its white sands, turquoise waters, stunning sunsets, and a variety of sea activities, it is an excellent choice, especially for those visiting Zanzibar for the first time.

One of the key features distinguishing Nungwi from other coasts is that swimming conditions are less affected by the tides. For this reason, the northern coast is the more convenient option if your priority is to be able to swim at any time of day. Nungwi is also one of the livelier areas, offering numerous diving centers, restaurants, and boat tour operators.

Nungwi is also known for its traditional boat culture. These sailboats, called dhows, have been the primary means of trade between East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and India for centuries.

Small dhows were used for fishing while larger ones were capable of long-distance trade. Trade in spices, timber, textiles, and other goods brought people and cultures from different shores of the Indian Ocean into contact.

The schedule of this trade was determined by monsoon winds. Since winds and currents shifted from Africa toward India during certain times of the year and reversed direction at other times, merchants sometimes had to wait months for the return journey. As a result, Indian merchants would spend a long time in East Africa, and East African and Arab sailors would spend a long time in India and other ports.

It is hard to imagine a better mechanism that would blend different architectures, foods, languages, and daily habits. These winds, which connected Zanzibar to the world, played a decisive role in shaping the island’s multicultural identity.

Today in Zanzibar, when you view the scenery on a sunset tour or sandbank trip from this historical perspective, the experience goes beyond a mere boat trip.

What to eat in Zanzibar?

A stall displaying meat skewers, samosas, breads, and fresh street food at the Zanzibar Stone Town night market

Like the island’s history, Zanzibar’s cuisine has a hybrid character. African coastal cooking, Indian spices, Arab rice traditions, and seafood from the Indian Ocean come together on the same plate. The Tanzania Tourist Board also highlights Swahili cuisine through its fresh seafood, spices, and coastal markets.

Spiced rice dishes like pilau and biryani, mishkaki (grilled meat skewers), seafood (especially fish and octopus), coconut-based dishes, and chapati-like flatbreads are among the options you will frequently encounter.

Forodhani Gardens in Stone Town is a good place to start tasting street food at night. The street food known as “Zanzibar pizza” (made in a pan with various ingredients inside a thin layer of dough) is actually quite different from Italian pizza. Spiced teas and fresh fruit drinks are part of the Forodhani experience.

One of the staple foods in Tanzania and the wider Swahili region is ugali. This thick grain porridge is served alongside various dishes. If you stay here for 2 to 3 days, you can visit the historic city center in the early hours of the morning or in the evening before it gets too crowded. You can have dinner in Forodhani and call it a day on the beach.

Nungwi and Kendwa are among the most convenient options if you want to swim and have a classic beach vacation. The fact that the northern coast is less affected by tides offers a significant advantage, especially for those who wish to swim at different times of the day.

Paje and Jambiani are ideal destinations for those wishing to experience tidal views, a kitesurfing atmosphere, and longer beaches. While Paje is vibrant, Jambiani is more tranquil and offers more scenes of local life.

Matemwe, located on the northeast coast, is one of the areas worth considering for those seeking a quieter stay and a trip focused on snorkeling and diving.

If this is your first time in Zanzibar, instead of staying at one hotel, you can stay in Stone Town for a couple of nights and then split the remaining nights between the northern and southern coasts. This way, you can see different aspects of the island more easily.

How many days to spend in Zanzibar?

An aerial drone view of palm trees and beach umbrellas lined up along the white sand beach in Zanzibar at sunset, with a traditional sailing boat cruising near the shore

If you want Zanzibar to be just a beach vacation, four or five nights might be sufficient. However, if you wish to visit Stone Town, spice farms, Jozani, and various coastal areas, or take an island or boat trip, a duration of six to eight days will offer you a more balanced vacation.

Zanzibar in popular culture

Zanzibar’s most well-known connection to popular culture is Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, who was born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town in 1946. The island appears in cinema and TV as well: the pilot episode of Netflix’s show Queen Sono is set in Zanzibar. Lois Patiño’s 2023 film Samsara was partly shot on the island as well. In literature, the island holds a significant place in the novels of Zanzibar-born Abdulrazak Gurnah, winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature, through themes of migration, colonialism, and memory. In the gaming world, the fact that one of Halo 2’s most renowned multiplayer maps is named “Zanzibar” represents one of the more unexpected influences of the island on popular culture.

A 7-day Zanzibar itinerary

Days 1 & 2: Stone Town

Spend the first days wandering through the streets of Stone Town. You can see the exteriors of the Old Fort and the House of Wonders, the Sultan’s Palace, the Old Dispensary, Zanzibar doors, barazas, and Forodhani Gardens on the same route. The first two buildings are not open to visitors due to restoration, but they are a natural part of a walk along the coast since they stand side by side on the Forodhani route.

On the second day, visit sites farther inland, such as Christ Church cathedral, the former slave market, the Hamamni Persian Baths, the area around Darajani, and the Freddie Mercury Museum. In the second half of the day, take a trip to Changuu Island.

Day 3: Spice farms

Leave Stone Town and join a spice farm tour. If you plan to merge your Zanzibar trip with your mainland trip, you can check different parks and safari destinations in our post: Seeing wildlife in Africa: The best safari destinations.

Practical info for a trip to Zanzibar

Aerial view of a traditional wooden dhow sailing in the clear turquoise lagoon between Paje and Jambiani in Zanzibar, with tourists on board

The currency used in Zanzibar is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). While you may also see prices quoted in US dollars in tourist areas, it is better to carry Tanzanian shillings for small businesses and local purchases. Turkish Airlines’ destination information for Zanzibar indicates that the electrical outlets are types D and G and that the time zone is GMT+3. Since Türkiye also uses GMT+3 throughout the year, there is no time difference between Zanzibar and Türkiye.

Swahili is the primary language of daily life. English is widely used in tourism. Although “Jambo” is a common greeting, you may frequently hear various other forms of greeting in everyday Swahili.

In Zanzibar, it is important to know that different manners are expected in coastal areas and residential areas. While standard beachwear is acceptable in beach and resort areas, dressing more modestly, especially when visiting Stone Town, villages, and religious sites, shows respect for the local culture.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to get a visa for Zanzibar?

Holders of regular Turkish passports need to get a Tanzania visa. You can get a visa electronically or, under certain conditions, at the border crossing. Holders of special, service, and diplomatic passports are exempt from visa requirements for stays of up to 90 days. You should check the up-to-date requirements through the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tanzania’s official visa channels before traveling.

Is travel insurance mandatory in Zanzibar?

Yes. For foreign visitors coming to Zanzibar, travel insurance provided by Zanzibar Insurance Corporation is mandatory. Insurance from another company is not valid. You can check the coverage details and application steps through Zanzibar Insurance Corporation.

What are the best months to visit Zanzibar?

The period between June and October is one of the best times to visit due to the drier weather. January and February can also be relatively dry. Long rains occur mainly between March and May.

How many days should I spend in Zanzibar?

A minimum of 5 days is sufficient to visit Stone Town and the island’s beaches. If you want to add spice farms, Jozani, boat tours, and different coasts, make your trip last 6 to 8 days.

Nungwi or Paje?

If you are looking for a livelier area where you can easily swim throughout the day and watch the sunset, Nungwi is the perfect option. If the tidal landscape, vast shallow lagoons, and kitesurfing are more important to you, Paje is a better choice.

Does the sea always recede in Zanzibar?

The tide affects the entire island, but its impact varies by coast. On the east coast, such as in Paje, Jambiani, and Matemwe, the sea can recede quite far during low tide. In contrast, around Nungwi and Kendwa, the water deepens more quickly, so swimming is less affected throughout the day.

How many days for Stone Town?

One full day is enough to visit the prominent structures. However, if you are interested in architecture, history, and food culture, you can spend two nights in Stone Town to see it without rushing.

What should I buy from Zanzibar?

the Darajani Market. Coconut oil, spice soaps, kanga and kitenge fabrics, Tinga Tinga paintings, and wood carvings are also among your purchase options. It is important to avoid products made from protected species, such as coral, seashells, and tortoiseshell.

Can I go on a safari in Zanzibar?

To experience a classic African safari, you should visit the national parks on the Tanzanian mainland. Zanzibar’s Jozani Forest, on the other hand, is best viewed as a destination for observing nature and endemic species rather than a safari.

From the coral stone walls of Stone Town to clove-scented gardens, and from intricate Swahili doors to dhow boats sailing across the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar tells a unique story in every aspect. When you finish your trip with the easily swimmable beaches of the north, the tidal landscapes of the east coast, and the island’s multicultural cuisine, it becomes clear that Zanzibar is far more than just a tropical holiday island.
