The bohemian spirit of Europe: Berlin

    Berlin, Germany
Berlin, capital city of Germany, in autumn.

Some say that autumn is all about color – when spring and summer’s green leaves turn brilliant yellow, red and orange. The German capital, Berlin, is a marvelous place to view this transformation, thanks to more than two thousand parks and numerous walking paths. Add the city’s historic buildings and countless museums, and you have an outstanding Central European autumn city.

Near the center of Berlin, the expansive Tiergarten Park is an ideal locale to observe autumn in action. In addition to trees, meadows and a lake, Tiergarten Park features walking paths, cafes and an arts and exhibition center. As well, there are numerous memorials within the Park. For more landscape views – and walking – visit the ‘Museum Island’. An actual island (Spreeinsel) in the Spree river, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to five prominent museums, the Pergamon Museum, the Bode Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Altes Museum.

Another locale where autumn is celebrated, Stuttgart has a milder climate compared to other cities in Germany, making it a perfect fall destination in Central Europe.

While the city has undergone commercial development, it has nonetheless successfully preserved its historical texture. On balmier days, you can stroll along Stuttgart’s streets, which are lined with both historic and modern structures. Among the city’s notable sites are the world-famous Mercedes-Benz Museum, and the 18th-century baroque-style Neues Schloss (New Palace), which features a grassy expanse. Just outside the city is the breathtaking – and massive – baroque-style Ludwigsburg Palace. Europe’s largest baroque palace, the Ludwigsburg Palace complex includes eighteen buildings and 452 rooms.

Any discussion of travel in Austria should include Hallstatt, one of Austria’s oldest towns and a top Central European destination in autumn. Set in Austria’s Lake District, this picturesque village is named after Lake Hallstatt; while it is spectacularly beautiful in all seasons, it has a fairytale-like atmosphere in the autumn. Do keep in mind that Hallstatt is in a mountainous region and the winter roads can be difficult to traverse.
