Carved into cliffs: Kokopelli’s Cave, Farmington/New Mexico

    cave view
Kokopelli’s Cave takes its name from a mythical flute-playing figure.

Named for the mythical, flute-playing deity of the Pueblo Native Americans of the American Southwest, Kokopelli’s Cave was built into the cliffs of La Plata Valley. Set around 20 meters below the surface, the 160-square-meter cave includes a bedroom, dining and living areas, a kitchen and a replica of a Native American kiva. The rock-carved bathroom features a hot tub. Equally spectacular is a terrace overlooking the La Plata River valley. Views of the Four Corners (the meeting point of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado) can be seen from the cliffs above the Cave. Just a note: there’s no elevator and this splendid suite is accessed by walking down a path and sandstone steps.
