    Notable Tekirdağ beaches

Tekirdağ’s beaches and coastlines offer excellent swimming along the Marmara Sea. Şarköy Beach, Kumbağ Beach, Altınova Beach and Marmaraereğlisi Beach are among the most popular beaches in the area; many of the Tekirdağ province’s beaches have Blue Flag status, as do several of the public beaches in Şarköy. Şarköy’s beaches are approximately 200 meters long and feature sand, pebble or rocky surfaces depending on location. There are showers, sunbeds, umbrellas and changing cabins at the district’s beaches.

Tekirdağ beaches are generally public and the majority offer free entry, though visitors can rent sunbeds and umbrellas.

    Şarköy Beach

Tekirdağ’s most popular beach is in Şarköy. This area is known for its Blue Flag public beaches and forested areas. Known for its natural beauty and clean sea, Şarköy is a popular summer destination for both local and foreign visitors. Şarköy Beach has a sandy beach and a rocky sea bottom; sea shoes are useful. The area’s beaches are ideal for families, with mainly calm and clean waters. Facilities include toilets, showers and changing cabins.

There are various social areas near the beaches, including the Trakya Fest Campground, which is about a five-minute walk from the beach. As well, numerous other hostels, hotels and cafeterias are within walking distance of the beach.

In addition to its Blue Flag beaches, Şarköy’s Uçmakdere district has paragliding facilities, offering participants beautiful aerial views of the Marmara Sea.

The Kumbağ area houses a range of accommodations and dining facilities, making it a standout among Tekirdağ public beaches. In addition, holiday villages and pensions are conveniently located within walking distance of Kumbağ Beach.

    Altınova Beach

Altınova Beach is approximately six kilometers from Süleymanpaşa, a central district in Tekirdağ. Tekirdağ beach travel calendar: When to go?

Timing is key to fully enjoying Tekirdağ’s beaches. The swimming season in the Sea of Marmara typically begins in early June and runs through October. Water temperatures are around 20°C in June but rise to between 23°C and 27°C in July and August. For the most comfortable sea experience, the best period is from mid-July to mid-September. Wind conditions also significantly impact the beach experience. The poyraz, a strong northerly wind that sometimes hits Tekirdağ’s shores, can make the sea quite rough. The southwest wind usually calms the sea but can make the weather feel heavy and stifling. Checking the wind forecast before heading to the beach is a helpful habit for a more enjoyable day by the sea.

What to eat after a swim in Tekirdağ?

Tekirdağ wins over holidaymakers not only with its beaches but also with its cuisine. After swimming in the sea, it would be a shame to leave without trying the region’s flavors. The city’s emblematic Tekirdağ köfte, a regional style of grilled meatballs, can easily be found at the köfte restaurants lining the coast. Especially the restaurants in the city center and the Değirmenaltı district have been serving guests for years with meatballs made according to the same recipe. The fish restaurants and köfte houses along the Marmaraereğlisi shore are also great stops for a quick flavor break after the beach. For a sweet treat, Tekirdağ’s famous peynir halva, a baked cheese dessert, is definitely worth trying. Widely available in pastry shops and dessert spots in the city center, this dessert is one of the region’s favorites due to its light texture and unique flavor. Those interested in enhancing their food experience can explore vineyard routes along the Şarköy–Mürefte line. This area, home to some of Thrace’s most fertile vineyards, is a must-see, especially for enthusiasts. Visitors can tour vineyard houses and walk among the vines. Combining a beach vacation with wine tastings and vineyard visits can greatly enrich the experience in Tekirdağ.

A guide to reaching Tekirdağ’s beaches from Istanbul

Reaching Tekirdağ from Istanbul is quite easy. By private car, a trip along the European Motorway (O-3/E80) and the E84 highway takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours to reach Tekirdağ city center. Weekend traffic may increase this time; leaving early in the morning can therefore be a smart choice.

For those without a private car, intercity buses offer a convenient option. Regular services depart from Istanbul, either from Esenler Bus Terminal or Harem Bus Terminal, with the trip lasting about 2 to 2.5 hours. Companies like Pamukkale, Metro Turizm, İstanbul Seyahat, Kamil Koç, and Kale Seyahat run frequent routes on this line. Once in Tekirdağ Bus Terminal, reaching the beaches is easy. Minibuses leaving from the terminal run direct routes to beach towns like Kumbağ, Şarköy, Altınova, and Marmaraereğlisi. Public municipal buses also connect the city center with these coastal areas. Additionally, some intercity bus services make stops directly at seaside spots like Kumbağ and Altınova, allowing passengers to disembark right in the beach area. This offers great convenience, especially for those taking a quick day trip.
