It’s tough to be as expressive in our text messages as we are in conversation. We’re also limited by the number of characters. The first step in addressing this deficiency was taken by Japanese interface designer Shigetaka Kurita, who designed 12x12 pixel yellow faces and symbols for NTT DoCoMo in 1999.
In the past two decades, emojis – as these symbols are now known – have entered the universal lexicon and offer an almost infinite range of expressions, feelings and images.
Just for fun – and also because July 17 is World Emoji Day – we decided to emojiate the cities where Turkish Airlines flies. We’ll describe the city with emojis, and you tell us which one it is ☺ Let’s begin!
