The Last of Us film locations

Filmed in Canada and the United States, The Last of Us locations cover a wide swath of both countries.
Alberta, Canada

We start following Joel and Ellie in the western Canadian province of Alberta, as they tackle clickers.
Calgary
The vast majority of the filming locations for The Last of Us are in Calgary, where sets also portrayed the cities of Boston and Jakarta, as well as Kansas City and, especially, the University of Eastern Colorado, a fictional college based on Colorado State University. The locations are designed to be similar to those depicted in The Last of Us video game.
Edmonton
Much of the series was filmed in Edmonton, with existing restaurants and shops – particularly those in downtown Edmonton – altered to appear old and decaying, as befitting the dystopian world of The Last of Us.
Other film locations in Alberta Province
Various sequences were shot across other areas of Alberta, which is home to most of the series’ filming locations. Canmore Township, Fort Macleod, Olds Township, Waterton Lakes National Park, Bragg Creek, Grande Prairie, Nanton and Lethbridge are also important points in The Last of Us.
Missouri, United States of America

Moving south, we follow Joel and Ellie to Kansas City, Missouri…
Kansas City
Kansas City, in the state of Missouri, plays a key role in The Last of Us as the home of the ‘Kansas City resistance’. During the filming in Kansas City and the surrounding areas, the city is the scene of chaos and an epic pursuit involving our main characters.
Boston addresses in the series

The city of Boston, in Massachusetts, appears in the first few episodes of the series as one of the last strongholds of humanity. Even as various characters struggle, we can see prominent Boston institutions in the background – that Boston is still recognizable distinguishes the city from some of the others called out during the show.
Massachusetts State House, where the characters arrive in search of a new solution; Boston Common, an iconic park; and the MBTA – the Boston transit network – are among the most immediately familiar locations. However, both the game and the series feature numerous structures that do not have real-life counterparts. Some of the giant skyscrapers and museums, included for general atmosphere, are good examples of this. However, the series reflects the ambiance of the American city effectively and certainly activates a desire to explore, despite its dystopian depiction!
