And we gently remind our readers of the delight to be found in 'hitting the road'. As Tolstoy said: “All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town.”

    Stop time in Malta

    Malta, Mdina at sunset.

First on our list is Malta. This beautiful island nation has a plethora of historic and natural sights.

You can start your trip in Malta’s capital, Valletta, and wander along its picturesque streets. From Valetta, the rest of the island is easily accessible – on the opposite coast, about a 13-kilometer drive, is the famous Blue Grotto. Another 13-kilometer drive takes you from the Blue Grotto to Marsaxlokk, a charming fishing village with spectacular views. Mdina, where Game of Thrones was filmed, is 14 kilometers from Valletta. The underground city of Hypogeum is about seven kilometers from Valletta. Gozo Island is Malta’s second largest island, and just a short ferry ride away. Experience love on the streets of Paris

Young couple posing in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In the 1954 film “Sabrina”, the title character says “Paris is always a good idea!” And indeed,  Paris is beautiful at any time of the year – but on February 14, the city’s atmosphere is particularly evocative.

Elegant buildings, stately avenues, cafes, museums and galleries… and the Seine River flowing. The scent of love in this city seems even more fragrant around this time. Go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Savor a selection of French pastries. Take a meandering stroll along the banks of the Seine…it’s almost impossible not to enjoy this most romantic of cities!

Say farewell to Valentine’s Day clichés

    Couple camping on Valentine's Day.

If you’re looking for an activity outside the usual Valentine’s Day routines, you and your loved one can take a couple’s camping trip and let nature provide the romance. This is just one suggestion but for other untraditional options, see our romantic holiday suggestions for couples who don’t like clichés.

    Explore a new place together

Couple watching the hot air balloons in Cappadocia.

Believe it or not, Cappadocia is one of the most romantic places in Türkiye. The area has stunning scenery – gorgeous valleys, fairy chimneys, gardens and orchards – as well as underground cities and historic sites, cave hotels and authentic entertainment. Whether you visit solo or with a loved one, you’ll find plenty to do. For one, take a hot-air balloon ride: this is one of the best ways to see Cappadocia! Go horseback riding through the countryside at sunset and enjoy local cuisine for dinner. Click here for flights to Cappadocia. See the romantic side of Germany

The Romantic Road through Bavaria Region, Germany.

Road trips have a certain allure, and a road trip through the Bavarian region of Germany is almost like driving into a fairy tale. The route is even called the “Romantic Road”, though the name actually refers to an ancient Roman route. There are sixteen main towns along the route, as well as smaller villages, vineyards, and walking and bicycling trails. It is most definitely one of the most picturesque roads in Germany, with castles, churches, and other medieval structures. For more information on the Romantic Road, click here!
